Culture in Jamaica epitomizes the rich blend from the different inhabitants that settled on the island. With the historical culture that comes from the Tainos, the Spanish and British, Jamaica enjoys contributions from all of them. But it was the slaves and the blacks who were the most predominant in the culture because stemming from the hardships that they endured from labor that were forced on them.

After slavery was abolished in Jamaica, there were other persons who were brought to the island in the form of indentured workforce and also contributed to the culture. They were from the Far East from the China and India; some of their ideas are still prevalent in the culture today.

The culture of Jamaica is like no other, visitors who come to this island enjoy everything that there is whether it’s the music, people, food, places. This is a country that so unique and embraces everything that is cultured and have interesting stories to tell. The different cultures have been intermingling on the island for hundreds of years now and while they offer an inspiring mixture, it also brings out some character traits in the Jamaican people that might seem out of place to an outsider. One thing is for sure Jamaicans like to talk about issues that most will not dare to talk about in public places, including some phrases that use such as “Miss Chin”, “browning”, “coolie”, “blacka” or “redman”.

The primary language spoken in Jamaica is the Jamaican Creole or patois, but the official language is English, this is because Jamaica was colonized by the British. This is another way that Jamaicans show the merging of cultures; the idiom is so unique that when you go to the different parishes you will hear different versions. The main features of the Jamaican language are African, Spanish, British, Irish, American idiom and the Rastafarians. Walking the streets of Jamaica you will here “nyam” (african for eat) or the more popular one that you will encounter as visitors are “no problem man”, “irie”, “cool”, “yea man” and many more.

One thing that can be said about the Jamaicans they are not afraid to try things out of their traditional culture. For instance, going to the Olympics with a bobsled team, Jamaica has never even had snow and yet these brave athletes decided they are going to do this sport, but that took courage. They were even featured in a movie called “Cool Running’s”, this is just another way how Jamaicans capture the hearts of people all over the world.

This Jamaica culture is so well loved by visitors, that the Jamaicans are bringing in new initiatives to highlight the culture in every sense of the word. Not just focusing on the white sand beach, music and sunshine, but inviting visitors into some of the deep rural areas that are filled with a lot cultural heritage. There so much places to visit and stories to hear and this goes beyond staying at a hotel and experience the real Jamaica culture.

The cultural landscape in Jamaica is one that is always changing, as soon as have grown familiar with a trend, it changes. This just highlights the passion, diversity and creativity of the Jamaicans always ready for the next exciting activity.
